Inside Nike: What Consumers Think and Prefer

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

Nike is one of the most known and highly rated brands in the sportswear industry. To understand how consumers perceive and prefer Nike, a survey was conducted with a diverse group of people of different ages and genders. The survey asked about brand awareness, reputation, product quality, product categories, purchase behavior, decision factors, and social responsibility. The data provides insights into Nike's market position and competitive landscape, as respondents also shared their thoughts on other brands. This analysis aims to offer a detailed understanding of consumer sentiment and behavior towards Nike in the ever-changing sports and lifestyle apparel industry.

The survey was conducted on females and male, age raging between 18 and 35. We were able to collect 68 responses, which we will be analyzing below. Different responses were collected from Europe, Middle East, and North America.

Awareness of Nike as a Sports Brand

First, we started the survey by asking consumers if they are aware of Nike as a sports brand and the response was 100% yes, showing that Nike is well known around the globe.

Reputation and Quality Ranking

Second, the reputation of Nike in the sports industry is generally rated positively, with responses ranging from "Good" to "Excellent." As seen below in the chart, most of the respondents in both gender groups found that the reputation of Nike is Excellent.

As for the quality, Nike sports products were rated between 1 and 5, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent. Most of the responses were positive.

Product Category Ratings

For this question in the survey, we wanted to see which product category comes to mind when thinking of Nike. The options were Sneakers, Athletic Shoes, Outwear & Jackets, Gym & Sports Clothes, and Accessories.

Sneakers and Athletic Shoes are the main categories that come to the minds of consumers when thinking of Nike. Given Nike’s history in sneakers and shoes, the above results indicate the strong and continuing association between the brand and these product categories. It is a testament to the company's success in these areas. Nike has built a strong reputation for producing high-quality sneakers and shoes that are both stylish and functional.

Purchase Behavior

After product category ratings, we asked consumers if they every purchased a Nike product and what influenced them to do so. The options were related to the brand reputation, quality, pricing, and other factors.

Most of the answers were Brand Reputation, Style & Design, Product Quality & Durability, and Comfort & Fit. This shows how Nike has successfully positioned itself as a leading sportswear brand by excelling in these key areas.

Consumers consistently value these factors, which highlights Nike's holistic approach to customer satisfaction. Nike goes beyond simply focusing on the functional aspects of its products, such as quality and durability, to also prioritize the aesthetic and experiential elements of style and comfort.

Innovativeness and Social Responsibility

We also wanted to see Nike's products are generally perceived as innovative.

While Nike is perceived as innovative, the survey indicates a mixed response regarding its social responsibility.

Everyday Attire Perception

Sportswear brands are now appealing to a wider audience, including people who wear sportswear for everyday casual wear. Therefore, we wanted to know if people do really perceive Nike as casual wear. We asked the question: Apart from sports, do you perceive Nike as an option for everyday, relaxed attire?

The main answer on the survey was yes. This shows how sportswear brands are not only catering to sports enthusiasts, but also people who enjoy wearing comfortable casual clothes and like the feeling of being relaxed.

Alternatives to Nike

The sportswear industry is a big market with a lot of brands competing against each other. As Nike is one of the biggest players, we wanted to see which brands are perceived as competitors.

Adidas was one of the most chosen brands. Adidas and Nike do have similarities as they provide almost same categories of the product. Designs do differ from one brand to another. However, when it comes football shoes, for example, designs can be similar. It all depends on the consumers preference and what they are more comfortable in.

Future Purchase Intentions and Recommendations

Finally, we wanted to see if consumers are willing to purchase Nike in the future, and if they would recommend it to other people.

For future purchase intentions, a considerable number of respondents are considering purchasing from Nike soon.

As for the recommendations, many consumers are likely to recommend Nike to their friends and family.

In conclusion, the survey conducted to explore consumer perceptions and preferences towards Nike has given us valuable insights into the brand's standing in the sportswear industry. Nike emerges as one of the most recognized and highly rated brands, enjoying a well-known awareness and positive reputation among consumers.
